Being a volunteer at Mission Care can mean a number of things – from volunteering in our pastoral team, to lending a hand in one of our charity shops, driving a minibus down to the coast or making sure our gardens are fed and watered. It may even be as simple, yet meaningful, as taking 30 minutes to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat with someone who would love to spend time with you. Here are just some of the ways you can volunteer for us.
Some of the ways you can support our residents within our pastoral team include leading or attending Bible studies, prayer meetings or church services. We also encourage our pastoral volunteers to spend one-on-one time with residents reading the Bible, praying or discussing pastoral issues. We ask that our pastoral volunteers are Christian and an active member of their local church.
Helping with our activities team may include leading or lending a hand at a group activity such as an arts and crafts session, or simply spending some time befriending residents by having a cup of tea and a chat. Perhaps you enjoy pampering others – our residents always enjoy hand massages, having their hair done or their nails painted. Or you like being behind the wheel – our minibus volunteers are vital members of the team helping transport our residents on numerous excursions throughout the year.
You can also support our residents by serving customers and preparing goods for sale in our popular charity shops and dementia-friendly cafe. Volunteering in our retail team is both enjoyable and rewarding, and a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. Our shops and cafe are busy, vibrant and friendly environments. A typical day will involve you serving customers, sorting donations, rotating stock and pricing goods. In Mission Cafe you will be helping to keep the tables clean and tidy, serving food and drink to customers and taking the time to get to know our customers a little better. You will be fully supported by our experienced retail team. You do not need any experience to join us, all we ask is that you bring enthusiasm, energy, and a willingness to learn.
We have two fantastic sensory gardens at Mission Care, one at Elmwood in Bickley and one at Willett House in Chislehurst. These gardens have been built with our residents front of mind and, as well as being peaceful retreats, they also provide sensory opportunities for our residents and their loved ones. Our gardens can always do with some love and attention throughout the year – from keeping them watered in the summer months, to clearing leaves in the autumn. This is the perfect volunteer role for those that are green-fingered and enjoy being outdoors.
