Last week a large group of residents at Love Walk did a two-day jewellery design course with professional designers from nearby jewellery centre, Flux Studios in Camberwell. This is the fourth time we’ve done a course with Flux as part of a project funded by Southwark Council’s adult learning service.
This time the participants learned how to make pieces with inlaid crushed and polished semi-precious stone. They were shaping brass and silver, mixing and setting crushed semi-precious stones including turquoise, lapis lazuli, coral and pearl, setting fixings into them, and finally filing and polishing the pieces. Everybody designed their own pieces – which were circular or heart shaped and decorated with stars or leaves. The finished pieces were made into necklaces and earrings.
Penny Brice, Activities Co-ordinator, commented: “This course proved to be a very popular activity which was great. A number of residents even asked whether we could have some jewellery making tools at Love Walk so that we could make more!”
